Some essential tips for Microsoft Office 2007 / 2010

I tried to save a picture in an email i received, but couldn't; only the "copy" option was given and didn't even work.
I came across a site that addresses the issue, and more. Written in superb tutorials you are guided to create macros that restore missing functionality:

  • You've probably come across this at least once; You receive a nicely HTML formatted message with embedded pictures so the sender can tell the story with the pictures and when you try to save the pictures you can only save them as a bmp-file. Or; you receive a fun e-mail with an animated gif-file and when you try to save it you can only save or copy it as a bmp-file which will of course break the animation.

  • Outlook 2007 uses Word as the HTML rendering engine which could end up in a malformed display of the email message. In short; The Word HTML rendering engine doesn't provide support for things like gif and flash animations, advanced css formatting and HTML forms and accessibility.

    This guide explains how you can render the message in a browser of your choice like Internet Explorer or Firefox by a click of a button.

    You'll see that these two work rightaway, after creating the macros and as long as you keep Outlook 2007 opened. Close it and try again, then they won't work anymore. The next step is also needed:
  • You have to sign your macros. For the required steps you must have Access installed as well.
    When you create a macro and are running Outlook with the default security settings you are not able to run the macro unless you either tamper with the default security settings or sign your own code with a digital certificate. Since it is not very common to have your own digital certificate you probably set your macro security to a lower level to be able to run your macro. There is no need for that; you can sign your own macros with SelfCert.exe so there is no more need to lower your security settings.

I came across this one for Outlook:
Change default location for pst and ost files
Makes it look so easy. But it doesn't mention why it results in error while trying to send and receive.
Solution: you have to delete the existing account and recreate it.
But it will then be named the same as your previous with a (1) at the end.
Restart Outlook. Receiving and sending will go without errors.
Close Outlook
In the Outlook folder delete the newly created one with a (1) at the end (or rather: create new folder and move into that).
Start Outlook. It will not even complain, and still work. Although Outlook will show a mix of your original account and the new one with the (1), look around and you'll notice.
Rename the account to remove the (1).
It took several attempts before it all finally stuck and still worked allright.

I wasted half a day on it before i found this out.

Oh, and (in Outlook 2010) disable Suggested Contacts.

Update: today i moved the Outlook folder again to another location. Had the same trouble with accounts not working and pointing it to the files (on the new location) did not help. The solution was much simpler this time: in Account Settings, click on the not working account, click button Change Folder, create a new Inbox, call it Pinbox. It immediately works. Now change from Pinbox back to Inbox, and it still works! :thup:

The Outlook data file can't be accessed, how do I repair it?
Read reply 1 (by Jim S.), and then go to reply 4 (by Rico) for the easiest solution. Those two replies are enough to fix this problem. :thup:

Fix for: messages don't get sent, keep stuck in Outbox.
This is a very good page with helpful tips on the issue:
To send the affected messages, you'll need to open the message, then switch to a different folder before clicking Send on the message. Do not go open the Outbox until after the messages are sent.

Excel 2010

Import or export text (.txt or .csv) files
For this to work in Excel 2010, you must uncheck "Use system separators" in Options -> Advanced.

But then still it may not work in Europe because Excel uses the set regional settings:
•On American Windows versions, the comma is set as default for the "List Separator", which is okay for CSV files.
•But on European Windows versions this character is reserved as the Decimal Symbol and the "List Separator" is set by default to the semicolon.

I'm in Europe (obviously) and do not want to change my regional settings, but just want on this one occasion to change a list in one column, to a list in a row with a comma as separator between the words (or ip adresses).

To do that, use Notepad++.
One of the many functions that makes this application so great.

  1. Open the Search -> Replace dialog.
  2. In the 'Search Mode' section at the bottom, check on Regular expression.
  3. In the Find what field enter this: [\r\n]+
  4. In the Replace with: ,
  5. Hit Replace all.
