OBviously, don't run Xfire and Steam (two online community servers) at the same time... some people actually try that thinking it's a normal thing to do and are surprised they get a black screen.
Maybe if you disable one if the 2 communities (in the platform settings), but i doubt it would work OK.

A possible alternative solution for people whose game doesn't run anymore.
Found from someone quoting from someone:
Make sure you have full admin access
go into C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
open the "hosts" file with Notepad
copy and paste the following text at the bottom into that hosts file.
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
Save, exit.
Run game.
