HD7970, The screen randomly bumps or shakes when in 2D mode

Postby Blín D'ñero » 10 Jan 2015, 04:28

My card is:
XFX R7970 Double Dissipation. [Part name: XFX 3GB D5 HD7970 Dual Fan]
The card runs @ stock speeds; CCC Overdrive is enabled (just to monitor), but all settings in CCC are at Default.

Setup: Eyefinity-3, Landscape, on 3 x Dell U2410
Connection: DisplayPort output on card -> Club3D CSV-5300 MST-Hub -> DisplayPort (native) input on all 3 monitors.

Driver: every driver since 14.4 WHQL upto Catalyst 14.9.2

From AMD's Top Driver Issues page (under Catalyst 13.12 WHQL):

Issue: The screen randomly bumps or shakes when in 2D mode

Symptoms: When in desktop mode or running 2D applications such as browsing the internet or watching a video, the screen will randomly shake or bump.

Applicable Products: AMD Radeon™ R9 290, R9 280x, R9 270x, R7 260X, HD 7xxx series

Recommendation: This issue is specific to the make of the card. AMD suggests that you contact your graphics card manufacturer for a solution.

This would suggest that the flickering that i am experiencing on my eyefinity setup ever since i bought this card, is specific to this XFX model or this card. XFX do not offer a new bios. Nor special drivers. The only special driverset from XFX might be the one on the CD that came with the card which is Catalyst 13.4...

This would mean that i am screwed with this XFX card? It will continue flickering with every new driver?

The XFX "support" website is useless. It has a downloadbutton for GPU drivers but that leads you to AMD's website for drivers page. Did i create an account and registered the card for that?

According to their AMD Radeon HD 7970 Double Dissipation Edition page, the card specs say:
Max Supported Resolution (DIGITAL) : 2560 x 1600

... which is rediculous because it would mean it does not support my 3 Dell U2410 in Eyefinity resolution of 5760 x 1200.
Hmmm let's see: scrolling up on the same page it says it supports AMD Eyefinity 6 Display Technology. Then of course it should say Max Supported Resolution per monitor (DIGITAL) : 2560 x 1600 and Max Supported Resolution in Eyefinity (DIGITAL) : 6 x [2560 x 1600].

In their "Helpdesk" page, you can only select issues from a small list in a dropdownbox.... So if you click "NO >> I could not find the answer the my question, I need to create a support ticket to contact the support team", ("the answer the my question"???) you get the words in red: FQA is required. which probably misspelled points to FAQ which is the dropdownbox with a small list of issues to choose from, of course none of which is mine. So i select Artifact, to at least get a next page. In the textbox it is not possible to paste text. So i have to type a detailed description of the issue all over. I'm hesitant: somehow i don't think this is going to lead me to a solution at all.

Very unprofessional, unsupporting website that basically says: we aren't sure about our card's specifications and we do not acknowledge general problems with specific models under our products, so we can't help you on the knowledgebase level or the drivers and bios download level, and that is also why we don't have a support forum.

They could learn a lot from Asus, Sapphire, MSI or Club3D.

So i submitted this:
Problem: The screen randomly bumps or shakes when in 2D mode. This happens since i bought the card and used Catalyst 14.4 WHQL and every driver upto 14.12.

Symptom: When in desktop mode or running 2D applications such as browsing the internet or watching a video, the screen will randomly shake or bump.

AMD acknowledge this as a driver issue with certain manufacturers: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Top-Driver-Issues.aspx#

and direct the customer to the manufacturer for a solution.

So here i am, asking you for a solution to the issue.

and i got promised a response within 24 hours.

In the meantime, i might try the drivers on the CD with the card.... Logically the best i can think of but i really don't like the idea because i would miss the recent Eyefinity improvements. :-|-:

Yes i got a response. Saying i should try the drivers on the CD. To see if it is the drivers, or the card.

Tomorrow then, or some time later when i have the time i'll try.

Hello Wade
Thank you for your support.

The issue does not occur using the drivers from the CD. Usually the issue started just after Windows bootup, when staying in 2D, until watching some streaming news (which uses Flash player).

I have given it several days to be sure of this test outcome.

I am now blaming AMD's Catalyst drivers team for the inconvenience caused.

Anyone who bought this card for gaming, thus always wants the latest Catalyst drivers installed with the newest fixes, is screwed.

Recommendation: This issue is specific to the make of the card. AMD suggests that you contact your graphics card manufacturer for a solution.
:-|-: Hmmm... no AMD, YOU make this card shake with your 14.xx drivers!

RMA'd the card, my shop tested it and agreed the card was faulty. A new card is on its way: with extra pay done (for price difference between the models), i'll receive the Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X!
