Operation: switching x58 motherboards - now Asus Sabertooth

Postby Blín D'ñero » 25 Mar 2012, 19:50

My previous motherboard P6T-Deluxe V2 had developed a cold boot defect. I could not live with that and decided to replace it with a new board, and chose the Asus Sabertooth x58.

So the rest of the hardware is:
  • Intel i7 920 @ 3.8 Ghz
  • Zalman CNPS9900 LED
  • 12 GB Corsair Dominator XMS3 CL8-8-8-24, 1.65V (CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 = 6 x 2GB)
  • 2 x Asus Radeon HD5870 (crossfire)
  • Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional PCIe
  • Optiarc DVD RW AD-5240S
  • 4 x WD Caviar Black 640GB
  • Corsair HX850W PSU
  • CoolerMaster Stacker STC-T01
  • 3 x Dell U2410 Eyefinity landscape
( Dell U2410 review @ hardwarecanucks )

Up and running now.
Really seems to be an ultimate quality board. Sofar i'm very happy with it.

The BIOS is almost identical, with a few improvements and some extra items. Oh, and the DRAM Bus Voltage now finally gives true [1.65] option.

Overclockersclub ASUS Sabertooth X58 Review
A single LAN port does not detract from the allure of this motherboard as most will never use a second LAN port since most LAN-parties these days use routers/switches rather than daisy-chaining towers together. The USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s hardware included is definitely a nice touch for future proofing a system as these technologies are just now emerging into the consumer world. Although, time will tell how well the NEC and Marvell chips handle the throughput as the technologies continue to develop. The E.Z. OC Profile and BIOS updating programs are extremely convenient. If the BIOS is reloaded, your settings aren't necessarily lost for good as they can now be stored on the CMOS or a storage device! The days of using a floppy or rigging a flash drive to update the BIOS are no longer necessary for this motherboard. Thanks to the EZ Flash 2 program, you can now install the updated copy off of various storage mediums.
I've never understood the reason for the second LAN port on motherboards. One is enough for me.

A good looking motherboard with a five-year warranty and high quality, rigorously tested components that is capable of high overclocks and coming in at a fair price, what else could you want?!
Exactly.

I noticed that this board supports up to 24GB RAM. Decided to give it that. I still had 2 sets of Corsair Vengeance LP — 4GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 (CML4GX3M1A1600C9) laying collecting dust, and just bought a third kit. Installed them, and they ran instantly without any issue. 24 GB in triple channel. This is my "workhorse" PC. With the RAM now doubled, my Photoshop (x64) is faster than it ever was!

Re: Operation: switching x58 motherboards - now Asus Sabertooth

Postby Blín D'ñero » 06 Jun 2014, 15:18

As of May 29, 2014 i have exchanged the HD5870 crossfire set for one HD7970.

XFX R7970 Double Dissipation.
Part name: XFX 3GB D5 HD7970 Dual Fan

One of the HD5870's now replaces my 4870X2 in my PC-3, another improvement.

That XFX R7970 has been replaced due to failure months ago.
During those months i put back in both the old HD5870's.

Since yesterday the HD5870's are replaced by a Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X (SKU: 11221-20-40G).

Before i took them out, i noticed how extremely hot the HD5870's in tandem get. :surpr: Not even by gaming, but just plain simple 2D! I didn't monitor or measure it, but my fingers felt 'a furnace'...
The new 280X is 40 C° (according to CCC) during 2d desktop at the moment.

The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 died, i replaced it with Edifier S530.
At the same time, the SB X-Fi in the PC has been replaced by a Creative Soundblaster Z.

Using a Creative Soundblaster Z, i found out that first thing to do is DISABLE "SBX Pro Studio".
The garbage makes my Edifier S530 sound like cheap boom-bass crap.
It has nothing to do with theSBX Pro Studio settings, it is simply not possible to get normal, clean audio from it. Disabling SBX Pro Studio completely, instantly solves the problem.
