My new PC [Nov 2009]

Postby Blín D'ñero » 26 Nov 2009, 22:17

I went for
  • Asus P6T Deluxe V2
  • i7 920
  • Zalman CNPS9900 LED
  • 12 GB Corsair Dominator XMS3 CL8-8-8-24, 1.65V (Corsair CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 = 6 x 2GB DDR3 SDRAM Dominator Memory)
  • Corsair HX850W PSU
  • Optiarc DVD RW AD-5240S
  • 2 x WD Caviar Black 640GB
  • [temporary] HD4870X2
  • Freed up one of my CoolerMaster Stacker STC-T01's

It's still waiting for a HD 5970 or 2 x HD5870s.... whatever i can afford in near future.

It's running now, W7 installed and all. :)

Searching for reviews on the Corsair memory part, i only found news articles like this: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/memory/corsair-releases-high-density-ddr3-american-blue-dhx-fins/

Corsair announced a new set of high density products for Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. These DIMMs are available in dual and triple channel configurations and are specifically tuned for Intel CPUs.

The 8GB and 12GB module kits feature Corsair’s DHX+ cooling technology, and sport new American Racing Blue fins and highlights. The dual channel configuration, part number CMD8GX3M4A1600C8, consists of four matched 2GB modules, optimized for P55 motherboards. The triple channel configuration, part number CMD12GX3M6A1600C8, consists of six matched 2GB modules, and is optimized for X58 motherboards. Both sets of modules have XMP profiles set at 1600MHz, with CAS latency settings of 8-8-8-24. An Airflow fan with matching blue highlights is included with both the dual and triple channel configurations.

“Windows 7 early adopters and other power users have recently been demanding 8GB and 12GB performance memory solutions to optimize their computing experience,” stated John Beekley, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Corsair. “These 8GB and 12GB configurations will allow these advanced users to get the most out of their high performance rigs, particularly if they often switch between demanding tasks like gaming and video production.”

Corsair has recently produced a whitepaper detailing some of the performance gains that can be realized with memory configurations of 8GB and larger. You can find the results of this study here. The study demonstrated that the higher density memory took excellent advantage of the improved memory handling in Windows 7, and resulted in substantial performance gains in system startup, shutdown, context switching, and game loading.
and a similar newsflash on Corsair intros DDR3 memory for i5 and i7 processors

Oooff. :D I bought it without realising there is also dual channel ddr3, the other part, so luckily i bought the right set.
At least now i know what it is; there's not much info about it yet!

Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600MHz 12GB CL8Kit w/6x 2GB XMS3 modules, CL8-8-8-24, 1.65V, for Intel i7, 240pin

Core i7 - Is High VDimm really a Problem? anandtech (Date: October 8th, 2008)

On my Asus mobo there was a sticker covering the DRAM slots (parafrasing): 'Warning from Intel: do not apply RAM that uses more than 1.65v otherwise it may damage your i7 CPU!!!!!'
My Corsair 12 GB kit when operating at 1600 Mhz uses 1.65v.

And:
While Asus and Intel (rightly) scare everyone (read: uneducated) into thinking that 1.65V on the DRAM voltage should be the absolute limit before you reach for the fire-blanket, all that's really needed it to obey this: keep the CPU uncore voltage within 0.5V difference of the DRAM voltage and there's no problem. Over this potential difference and you’ll greatly increase the chance of CPU death, but it certainly won't happen instantly in a big ball of fail fire if you make a mistake.

The i7 920 is running excellently at a rockstable 3.8 Ghz on 1.225v.

Yellow question mark, in Device Manager > "Other Devices" > Unknown Device and "ACPI/ATK0110" was listed under properties. Solution: install Asus AISuite from the mobo cd, and problem is gone.
I don't want that software installed, so i uninstalled AISuite and problem did not come back. In Device Manager, under System Devices, a ATK0110 ACPI Utility was added as new. :)

Later i found a seperate ATK0110 file on Asus' site. That's what i'm using since.

The Zalman CNPS9900 LED Review frostytech.com
noise level
With its 92mm fan spinning at 2000RPM, the Zalman CNPS9900 LED heatsink produces about 57.5 dBA noise. On PWM compliant Intel/AMD motherboards the BIOS will automatically scale down fan speed to as low as 1000RPM depending on the current thermal loads... so on average it's likely to run much quieter. At the reduced speed of 1000RPM, the CNPS9900 LED produces a very quiet 39.3 dBA noise.

Intel test results
*TIP - Here's the real tip for users of the Zalman CNPS9900 LED heatsink... Remove the plastic fan shroud. When the fan is running at 2000RPM this will reduce the sound pitch noticeably and drop noise levels very slightly (~2 dBA), in addition to lowering temperatures by about a half a degree. The real benefit however comes when fan speed is at its lowest. In our tests noise wasn't significantly affected by removing the fan shroud while the fan was spinning at 1000RPM, but the CPU die temperature did drop by a good 5-6°C!

Chassis is closed > better airflow/ventilation. Also, room temperature has dropped since winter really has set in now. Also, this time CPU-Z reads correctly.

Nice benchmark. :) HD4870X2's DX10 hardware tesselation is completely ignored, that version is history. So, no tesselation on this card, makes the stone stairs flat so you couldn't ascend them...(exactly as this picture on hardocp.com shows). Which means that games that require tesselation look rediculous on a card with no support for it or in a non-DX 11 mode. Must upgrade to HD58xx.
