Playing Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Postby Blín D'ñero » 26 Jun 2017, 03:46

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a fine game.

Or rather it is so-so.

Until this rediculous challenge: 'Defeat Krugersec'. Why??? :smh:

Why do i have to defeat the armed K-Sec guards without being able to even pick up a firearm like you could in ME1. Why try to defeat the armed guards without using a gun when your jump kick is made incrementally sluggish while your health declines (and no way to restore). Why try to defeat the armed guards when fleeing from them is disabled. Who designed this crap?! Who told them to?
Managers are ruining the world. This is not Mirror's Edge.

1. you cannot pick up and use the dropped firearms (like you could in ME1)
2. you can only kick
3. your health diminishes quickly
4. so while your health declines, your moves and kicks get more sluggish while more armed guards are coming and attack you
5. and you have no shield against their beams and bullets
6. and there's no way to restore health (no health packs )
7. the spirit of mirror's edge was to escape, not to confront heavily armed guards
8. you are a runner, not a trained fighter.

This is not a challenge, this is a fiasco.

Always, after killing some 18 (i have not counted) guys i die. Some were heavily armed with automatic firearms, some with stunguns. I kicked like an ape and agile enough to win the Olympics. It's not good enough for this game. Some hidden algorithm in the game decides that i'm not doing the desired thing, so i'm out.

And then, i got it: the solution must be found within the limitation, yes!

You MUST use heights provided by the blocks and objects to jump on them (the K-sec guards) so they become 1-kick kills.
Even though they are armed, their weak spot is being jumped upon from above while getting kicked on the head.

The clue is to master this tactic.

I only had 1/5th meager health bar left when stomping the last guy. I did not realise it was the last guy but noticed that suddenly my full health restored, and a video with a helicopter seen from above started. Now it is another guy (robocop helmet type, but only kicking) approaching me.

I paused the game. Not now, later...

Robocop is the easiest, he is unarmed. This whole section is way easier than it initally looks. Reading back, when i struggled i got it totally wrong, because this whole part to defeat Krugersec is nothing, it's easy. :D

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a marvellous game.
It's far from perfect but the challenges the running and the exploring are great. And the upgrades. And you can always stop, and next time proceed from the exact spot where you were. Nice for the casual gamer, hey i'm not addicted, i play in my free time.

Some of the tricky jump/climb moves, to reach some goodie, reminds me even of Painkiller! :D

Also there's cheating. Not by me, by the developers. Like accelerating in mid-air! It's funny though. I mean the wallrun-> Q for turn -> Space again to accelerate in mid air. It's weird. I found that out intuitively, because in reality there would be no way to reach the top of the large room with stairs and platforms by climbing: too large distances, but here it was clearly the only way so i just tried. Very suprised that it worked. That part, the exaggerated way way too long jumping, reminds me of classic Tomb Raider.

There is a lot to enjoy in this game.

Next to what's to complain about, like the horrible horrible characters, the hooded idiots with their rediculous facepaint, their face masks, their skin-graffiti and their juvenile-criminal way of behaving and talking because they're the "Underground People"! The very annoying voices paired to the speed-challenges every time you try ("you ruined everything!!!"). These elements make me spit furiously on the game.

The time-challenges make this game, in the wide detailed cityscape full of surprising little spots and spaces.

However, the diversions are less fun again: very tight on the second, so very often you don't make it and then you get the complaining in your ears (i play with headphones), very unpleasant, the same as with the deliveries. The pressure to make it, the complaining when you fail, the disgust in their voices, that style is really bad game design. Much displeasure with most of the voices in the game. Shame, the music is good, but when the annoying voices hit me i take off my headphones and play in silence.

Oh and that Mirror's Edge Catalyst does not support Radeon crossfire is very disappointing.

No "R" for restart in the deliveries and diversions when you know you're going to fail. You have to commmit suicide to restart, which takes time...

The distractions. Why are they so time limited? It is so stupid.

I like challenges and don't go them out of the way so i like this game and certainly keep trying.

But the extreme time limits on the distractions make no sense at all. I AM distracting a bunch of guards, and am almost in time for the next crystal-shaped POINT blinking on the terrace but the next bunch of guards there, already are shouting and running towards me so they ARE in the process of distraction. Then why do i get the stupid "you failed" message when they are obviously already distracted?! That time counter makes no sense! :smh:
