Playing Thief_2014

I like arcade. I like when a game is designed linear. I like the repetition belonging to that style (trial and error). But not this way.
So i went to the architect's house. A dog almost alerted too much. So i killed it and hid in the closet. Alas, that way the game makes an autosave. So now my last save is with two alerted guards. They see the dead dog. I kill one guard and fail to kill the second. I die. Game reloads and now only one guard passes by who doesn't notice the dog is dead. I sneak away.
(in the following part i die 2 or 3 times while exploring (very dull: not much to explore!) and notice that after reloading again there are 2 guards coming)
Anyway.
Looking at the options i think i am missing a rope arrow or two. While busy with thinking, i get attacked and die.
I decided to return to the city anyway and buy some of those ropes.
Later i come back (with the newly purchased ropes) and whatdoyouknow: all little pickups are there again.
While I thought i could travel between locations, in fact the game makes me replay levels?

I don't know where to begin, describing what's so stupid with this game.

There's some to like, foremost the artwork: it looks all very good and well done. But the game itself...

So "Return to the city" makes you not travel to the city, do some business and come back later, but it makes you stop this "challenge", go to the central "city" map, and return later to restart the "challenge". This type of playing it's like it is made for kids with psp's.

The challenge being: to alert or not, the same silly predictable guard, his companion, their dog. or avoiding them and alerting (or not) a clone of those guys walking on the balcony. It's all so silly.

Combat is absurdistic ridiculous. Anti-PC, anti-keyboard.

There's also good old fashioned exploring going on once you're in the building.
Maybe that's the problem with the game overall: outside, the creators are not very inventive, and offer very little options to the player: most is not climbable. Nothing is moveable. Guards are predictable and you just wait till they're around the corner.
Inside, it's sneaking and stealing like in the old games like it should.

But then, oh the combat. Painful.

Oh my god. Games get dumber and dumber. The escape from the Eastwick building, it's almost completely scripted! You have to push W to keep going, but all the sliding and jumping and rope throwing are all scripted! :clown:

Freeing Basso from the prison is scripted! So i read in the Document that he is number 5 of 6 prisoners so i went searching with that in mind... until suddenly scripted animation took over, apparently i had found him, then a drama scene followed... oh what a crap cinematic theater this all is. A lot of dumb stealing silver and gold objects, walking and sneaking from object to steal to object to steal (most objects and environments are only decoration you cannot interact with), avoiding some guards and knocking out a few others. It's not very exciting to start with, and then they add scripted scenes... :-|-: You cannot jump, unless there is a blue tile on the wall to grab... feels cramped, unnatural, something for 6-year olds... Some of the minipuzzles are a little fun, some of the sneaking is somewhat fun, but most of it is not. Combat, as i said, is horrible. Using bow and arrow, expensive extra steel arrow, is almost useless: 2, 3 arrows and the guard still walks goddammit. Taking down from behind is more effective. But they throw one knife at you and you're dead.

The safe code to the great wall safe puzzle is idioticly not what you have on your document, but those numbers scrambled. Although there is no indication. So it is MADDENING that you cannot finish the left side so long as you think that 901 is correct. It is IMBECILE that you cannot complete the number from your document, so you CANNOT know that the number isn't correct. I thought it was a bug. Looked it up on the internet and then... o wow that's just great.

And during the second part you are confronted with 8 guards and the game's terribly poor combat? No, just flip the lightswitch (take the bracelet while you're at it) and run for the safe and finish the code while all guards in the dark are moronically looking in the wrong direction. :-|-:
Followed by scripted animations with "dark" prerendered drama-dialogue teenager-TV style...

The traps with a button in the wall to disable it... what's the freaking point.

Square Enix... aren't they the people who made the almost worst game ever Deus Ex Human Revolution? That explains the rediculously abundant oversized airvents on ground level, the rediculously easy looting because gold silver and jewelry is just lying everywhere for grabs.

So you have to open the gate for drunken Lenny, and follow him to his hideout.
But you *must remain undetected*. Well it starts with you opening the gate in full sight of Lenny. But that's no problem: the game doesn't consider it "being detected". So you follow Lenny to the hooker on the bridge, dump her in the shit, and then when Lenny stands there swinging on his feet, when you pass behind him...BAM! Lenny notices you with the eyes he has in his back- detected!- and YOU FAILED (the game shouts to you in big letters). In my opinion it is the game, almost everywhere, failing with its detection system.

When exploring you find a secret switchdoor: as soon as you've flipped the switch to open it just to take a peek, you're taken through it with no way to go back! I so hate that. Let me decide when i'm finished exploring and step through that door myself goddammit. Same with the windows. Or some vents; you then have to run through half the building to get back to where you were...

Selective detection: in the garden, if you run through water, all guards instantly notice and try to kill you. But. You can disable all the waterfalls in the garden (guards are standing on a balcony on top) by turning a valve, so suddenly it is absolutely silent in the entire garden, the waternoise has stopped completely. Yet none of the guards react to that!

During loading you get many gameplay Tips... about 5 per second. Thanks a lot...

What a deception this game is. Nowhere is it thrilling, does it give you the feeling of a wonderful adventure that makes you play all night because you can't leave it. Opposite is true: i have to drag myself through it.

I don't think i will finish it.
