Crossfire Windows 7 (x64), how well do the games run

Postby Blín D'ñero » 21 Jan 2009, 17:15

EDIT 2012: I am no longer updating this thread since i use 7970 CF, as all games run fine in crossfire.

Since i'm using 2 x HD5870 in crossfire, thread title now changed accordingly.

Image

(Thread originally started in September 2008):
HD 4870X2 on Vista / W 7 (x64), how well do the games run

Reporting how each game i own runs on my Radeon HD 4870X2 on 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7.
This was meant as test to find out:
  • does HD 4870X2 run all games old and new at least as well and fluidly as a single gpu card?
At worst the card runs games as a single 1 GB card - at best as two cards with decent crossfire-scaling, right? :)
  • whether [crossfire] works or [no crossfire] at all.
  • and do they all run on Vista x64 / W7 x64.
So i don't have to keep dual boot XP/Vista to run incompatible games on XP. However, for Tomb Raider 1 / Dgvoodoo i need XP anyway.

Always the maximum settings [previously @ 1600x1200/85Hz, now @ 1920x1200/60Hz], and in DX10 / DX11 when applicable. Some games on Vista / 7 are fixed at 60 Hz (like Crysis Warhead).

Not in a hurry at all, and the list will gradually and randomly grow, just when i feel like trying certain game.
Or if anyone has a request, here is the list of all games i have: list

Image

The card is running 53°C idle, fan 30%. Which is not audible: my Zalman CPU fans produce the only fan-noise i hear.
Before gaming i select one of the profiles i made, usually "Crysis (fan 80%)" to prevent the card getting hotter than about 78 °C ... that is quite noisy, but gets covered under the game's sounds or -most of the time i play with headphones on anyway.

Re: Crossfire Windows 7 (x64), how well do the games run

Postby Blín D'ñero » 21 Jan 2009, 17:16

A good deal of these were tested on HD4870X2. Now continuing updating using 2 x HD5870 crossfire.
[Updated frequently]

From my list of games i've tried the following (and more but i no longer update this thread) on Vista (x64) / Windows 7 (x64), and all these games run excellently (unless mentioned in red) on this crossfire configuration:
  • HD4870X2 (tested on CRT @ 1600 x1200 / 85Hz)
  • HD5870 crossfire (tested on LCD @ 1920 x 1200 / 60Hz)
  • HD7970 crossfire (tested on LCD @ 2560 x 1600 / 60Hz)

Advent Rising: install___run. [crossfire]

Alice Madness Returns: install___run. [crossfire]
Has a framerate cap apparently. So what to do:
Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\Config > edit aliceEngine.ini by: changeing MaxSmoothedFramerate (at two places, use Find option) from 31 to what you want, i do 60; and disable vsync: UseVsync=True to =False. I also make the file Read-only.

Aliens vs Predator 2: install___apply avp2_en_096 patch___run. [crossfire]

Alone in the Dark 2008: install___run. [crossfire]
The game appears to be not compatible with Windows 7. It only runs at its default low (800 x 600?) resolution. Trying to change resolution, by going to Options > Display the game instantly crashes.

American Mcgee's Alice: install___run. [no crossfire]
Unfortunately on Vista the game only runs at 60 Hz, i found no way to force it doing 85 Hz on my CRT.
Update: i no longer play on CRT, since april 2010 i have a Dell U2410. While 60 Hz on a CRT is a disaster, on an LCD it is perfect.

Runs great (Catalyst 9.6, 9.7) with Physx disabled ( :( ). Except for repeated crashes in sm4.0 at certain spots (killing first spider), clearly their patch isn't good enough for ATI cards, despite what their patch fix list says...

FakeFactory Cinematic Mod (any version): install __run. [crossfire]
This mod gives a nice ingame AA (as opposed to Half-Life 2 original). In CCC i have Vsync on, AI set to Standard.

F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin + Reborn expansion: install___run. [crossfire]
At all maxed out advanced settings @ 1920 x 1200, still about 350 frames per second, so to prevent overheat i play this one with vsync on.

F.E.A.R. 3: install___run. [crossfire]

FlatOut Ultimate Carnage: install___Games for Windows Live is installed___run. [crossfire]
Vista (64) doesn't allow the game to run at 85 Hz refreshrate even though it is configured in the setup menu. So on my CRT it runs @ 60 Hz with black bars at top, left and bottom. I have found no way to force it and RivaTuner's RefreshOverrider doesn't manage it either. Only in windowed mode i get fullscreen 1600x1200, in a window. Shame. Bioshock managed it in the patch, NFSUndercover is tweakable, Doom3 also, etcetera.

Gears of War: install___install Games for Windows Live ( *sigh*) + create profile, apply patch 1.1`___run. [crossfire]

Half-Life 2 and Lost Coast: via Steam___auto-update___run. [crossfire]
Known H-L2/Radeon 4xxx problem: ingame Anti-Alias not working. Solution: disable AA in the game. In CCC apply Smoothvision HD Anti-Aliasing (i have 8x, it's enough) + edgedetect. Enable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing, see this thread. And of course: Vsync on, AI set to Advanced, see this thread. Or run the Fakefactory Cinematic Mod (any version) over it; then ingame AA is working.

Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and 2: via Steam___auto-update___run. [crossfire]
Ingame Anti-Alias is working. But i just keep the same settings as in Half-Life 2: disable AA in the game. In CCC apply Smoothvision HD Anti-Aliasing (i have 8x, it's enough) + edgedetect. Enable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing, see this thread. And of course: Vsync on, AI set to Advanced, see this thread.

I was just monitoring the fps difference between hd5870 single and crossfire ME2 performance and apparently the game is capped at 60fps.

Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter: install___run. [crossfire]

Medal of Honor (2010): install ___ run. [crossfire]

Medal of Honor Airborne: install __apply patches 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3__run. [crossfire]
It doesn't recognize the modern hardware so it guesses it is underspec. Just apply the max settings, no problem.
Later, when attempting to reinstall this game i found it had a problem: "Ageia PhysX 8.10.17 is already installed. You must uninstall the existing version before installing PhysX version 7.07.09". :clown: So i did. When another game demands a recent physx version, i'll change again. Installing game went fine. Takes very long to install the patches though.

Mercenaries 2: install___apply patch 1___play. [crossfire]

Metro 2033: install___play. [crossfire]
I wrote:HD5870 crossfire / Catalyst 10.6:

The lowest fps was no exploding cart behind me, but a station with 5 ~6 gunmen and exploding barrels and the barricade in front i shot (i suppose is Physx related).
I played the whole game on Cat 10.4a, nowhere is performance unsatisfying. Now on 10.6 it doesn't seemt to be any different, at least not less.

Problem with 9.11: dull colours. Problem with 9.12, 9.12 Hotfix, 10.1, RC2 beta: crossfire bug: flickering head- and tail lights on cars and start/finish lights. Thread. This issue has finally been fixed in Catalyst 10.2!

Ingame Anti-alias not working, so:
CCC Settings:
Smoothvision HD Anti-Aliasing: disable 'use application settings', level 16x, filter edge detect
Smoothvision HD Anisotropic Filtering: use application settings

On my CRT, i want refresh rate 85 instead of the default 60. Therefore, i go to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\EA Games\Need for Speed Undercover]
and edit the dword "g_Refresh" value to =dword:00000055
(default= [0000003c] = 60)

Make sure to have vsync enabled to avoid flickering in the sky in first level.
On Windows 7 x64 and quad (i920) CPU, i got crackling sound. Didn't happen on my Vista x64 and E8400 [dual core] (with the exact same soundcard X-Fi Titanium Fatal!ty). I found out it's an affinity issue:
  1. do NOT launch the game with admin rights!
  2. after launch -during the intro- start TaskManager
  3. on the trl.exe process, set affinity to 2 cores (0 and 1) [meaning on my hyperthreaded CPU i have to uncheck 6 of the 8 cores, even 3 is too much for the game]
  4. close TaskManager
Disabling Hyperthreading in BIOS has no effect, so don't bother with that
  5. enjoy the game with perfect sound
Now replaying the game using Catalyst 10.8, so i will find out if this old problem still exists:
Problem (Cat 8.9): In next generation mode, Khazachastan level and Nepal Galali Key level always crash. Can only pass those parts in normal mode. All other levels run fine.
Both these problems do not happen on XP, Catalyst 8.9, with the same settings ingame and in CCC, so it's not the card but the Catalyst Vista drivers (64-bit, i haven't tested Vista 32-bit). I haven't tested on a single HD 4870 either yet.

thread

Update: yep, with Catalyst 10.8 these bugs are still there. Happens with crossfire disabled as well, so it is not a Crossfire issue. Happens with affinity to only 1 core as well, so it's not that either. XP compatibility mode doesn't help. Unsolved issue with 'Next-Gen' mode on 64-bit Windows (XP/Vista/7). I'm not alone, as shows here and here.

To fix flickering main menu (game itself isn't affected): in the game's setup menu untick triple buffering. In CCC you can keep it enabled. And V-sync on.

Wolfenstein (2009): install___apply patch 1.1___run. [crossfire]
V-sync enabled (without it you get asynchronous artifacting halfway the screen)

You Are Empty: install___run. [No crossfire]
Vsync enabled, because without it, the FMV's show horizontal asynchronous artifacts.
